When I was growing up, I had family in South Dakota—I think we visited once. The rest of my family was mainly in Minnesota, with some people in Michigan. My immediate family were outliers, as my parents had moved to Eastern Washington state, where we were like the Robinson Crusoe of Jews (with a few others). All in all, we didn't live in majority Jewish communities.
